?If you see an emergency vehicle tending to an accident or breakdown on the shoulder of the road and cars are whizzing past, you may not be sure what to do to make sure that you and those on the shoulder are safe. There are some regulations to keep in mind if an emergency vehicle is on the side of the road offering assistance to a fellow motorist.

These regulations are called Move Over laws and they are in effect for all 50 states. By law, you should change lanes if you're able so that the lane closest to the shoulder of the road is clear. If you're not able to change lanes, it's important to slow down. Go 15 miles per hour slower than the speed limit that is posted for the area. Keeping these laws in mind will make the road safer and reduce the risk of injuring stranded drivers and the emergency personnel who come to their aid.
